Day #16 -- High water anxiety

Left sleepy Harrison after a night of light rain and reached Harsens after 3.5 hours (191 miles).  Well we reached the ferry. Christie had called to say there was some question about ground clearance getting on the ferry because of the high water.

We lined up and detached the car, and the first guy said take the other ferry because it was lower. Second guy comes and I mentioned I was worried about clearance, and he shrugged it off and waved me on. They were not too interested in talking since it was a busy Friday afternoon. Jim says the island has maybe 2000 winter residents, maybe 4000 in the summer and 5500 on a holiday. About a half mile before the ferry, we were gonna stop at the bowling alley and detach but they were having a flea market. No where to park. I looked in the mirror and there were probably 2 dozen cars, so I pulled over so as to not acquire any enemies. Only on that road for a few miles.

Anyhow turns out when your front end weighs 12,000 lbs the ferry gives you a little nod when you pull on, so about 3 inches of clearance appeared and we didn't scrape in the center! (whew)

Jim met us at the ferry as you can walk across for free, and had us park on the street by his house while we reconnoitered the parking situation. We decided to nose up to the garage.

Jim & Jenny's 3 daughters and families were all on Harsens for a cousin's wedding (Julie and Christie from Marquette and Anne came from Virginia). Anne had planned a BBQ dinner as a surprise for their Mom's Bday so people started coming out of the woodwork for a nice family evening! Tom was also able to join us.

  1. Ah, typical Michigan weather. Same old boring weather here! Say hi to Tom for us, too. Were you the only vehicle on the ferry?

  2. What a great trip! Heat, mountains, wind, rain, clouds, streams, lakes, lochs, lighthouses, grand old homes, ferry boats, beautiful trees and campsites with rv rallies, and, of course, family and friends. What more could you ask for?~Bill
